Meaning of Gateway & Gateway Definition
Gateway
1. A computer that sits between different networks or applications. A gateway converts information, data or other messages from one protocol or format to another. A router can perform some of the functions of a gateway. Internet Gateway can route messages between the corporate network and the Internet. Because businesses often use different protocols on their local area networks (LANs) than those on the Internet, the gateway often acts as a protocol converter, allowing users to send and receive messages over the Internet. 2. A product or feature that uses proprietary technology to connect dissimilar systems together.
A point within a network that is connected to other networks.
